XXIIIth
International Waterbike Regatta (IWR), Genoa

23rd - 26th of May 2002

by: Leo de Vries

Price giving

After some wonderful competitions between the different student teams that sailed into battle with their boats on the waters of  Genoa, lists were summed up and winners became clear of the different disciplines.

Overall results.
First overall became L' Ordegno. She was in top shape and so where the bikers. They became the overall winner of the IWR 2002! Are the waterbiking winters better in Italy? Well, probably it also has to do with pasta because the numbers 2 and 3 of the overall results were also taken by Italians. Congratulations to all of you!

Daniëlla lead the price giving which was quite a task because of the many people that joined the regatta. Professor S. Pontremoli (Magnifico Rettore) and the university of Genoa were thanked a lot for making this International Waterbike Regatta XXIII possible.

After the disappearing one year ago of the flag from Genoa team, in Hamburg, Germany, no further information had been received. Therefore they put a price, a bottle of wine, on it for the hero that brought it back, dead or alive!
And Genoa got back their flag, finally!

There was also a kind of price given to Waterbiking.org by Fabricio, standing on the right hand side of the phot below. Stefano, standing in the purple t-shirt on the photo next to me, tells the story behind it:
"We are really happy to know that you present the human powered boats for the world on the website www.waterbiking.org. We want to tell you the story behind this trophy: I had an idea of giving you a carsic rock (Trieste is in the middle of a Carsic zone) during one of my Mtb tours around Trieste, four months before the IWR 2002. We wanted to give you something characteristic form Trieste and at the same time self made and natural, like World of Waterbiking is, and a carsic rock was what we needed...!!! So during the next mountain bike tours I looked around and around but none of the rock parts was "the rock". In fact, I was looking for this one rock with a particular design... Until ten days before the Trophy in Trieste I had not found one satisfactory. The weekend before the races in Trieste something happened..!!! I was walking in a very special place (with a very special girl..) in the middle of nature on the hills with view on the sea and the harbour of Trieste along a natural path formed by carsic rocks. And "that rock" attracted my attention because of its particular design. I said "I've got it!" and the trophy for the web became real..!!!!"
